remembering coach murray

Matthew Owen Murray, 64, passed away unexpectedly on July 13, 2026, surrounded by

the love of his family.

Matt was born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, and was raised in Mount Vernon, Virginia.

He built a life rooted in service to his community and devotion to the people he

cherished. He married Joanne Lowry in November 1994, and they raised their family in

Alexandria, Virginia. After 39 years he retired from the Federal Energy Regulatory

Commission in July 2025 and continued to pursue his passion as co-owner of the J&M

Swim Club of Alexandria (NCAP). He remained a steady and generous presence to all

who knew him.

Matt is survived by his wife Joanne, son Michael (Megan Marr), daughter Kate, sister

Kay (Bill Price), and brother Mark and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in

death by his brothers Kurt (Mary Murray) and Michael. He was adored by his wife and

family, all who will carry his memory forward with deep affection and gratitude.

Matt was gentle, kind, funny, and endlessly warm and he had a gift for making others

feel welcomed and valued. His presence brightened gatherings, his guidance shaped

lives, and his compassion extended far beyond his family. He loved his friends, music,

cooking, and cheering for the Penn State Nittany Lions; passions he shared freely and

joyfully.

Matt was an accomplished businessman and civil servant, admired for his integrity,

dedication, and leadership. A pillar of his community, especially the swimming

community where he was a respected and beloved figure. He served as a mentor and

coach; roles he embraced with warmth and humility.

A Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in

Mount Vernon, Virginia, on September 9, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a reception.
